Sweden

 

  • A large country in Northern Europe, Sweden exudes best in being a very peaceful destination. As it offers liberal, cosmopolitan, secular as well as democratic and environmentalist values, US tourists are assured about not having cultural clashes that may be common in other locations.

The Life:

  • Open yet discreet – people at first are quiet and reserved but when they get to know the tourists that they are dealing with, they will treat them warmly. Everyone values privacy and with that celebrities and other famous personalities can walk around without being disturbed.
  • Sweden ranks the highest in terms of living standards as well as life expectancy.

 

Cost of Living:

  • Comparing to its neighboring countries, Sweden can be very expensive although there are cheap alternatives if sought.

  • No visa is required for US tourists. A valid passport as well as all other travel documents must be presented.

 

Banking:

  • Almost all ATMs in the country accept international cards. The allowable amount to withdraw per use is at around $1400 and a maximum of $2800 per week.

 

Language:

  • Swedish is the official language of the country. But most Swedes can speak English fluently. The country’s English proficiency is high. However, any attempt of speaking their language is greatly appreciated.

 

Language Schools:

  • Schools are free for all residents of Sweden and in that case, US tourists who desire to study Swedish may not need to pay tuition fees. However, the government may have implemented new rules starting this year, so better check that out first.

Food:

  • Swedish cuisine typically involves a hearty meat and fish with potatoes. Their modern cuisine contains bread but traditional everyday dishes will include meatballs, hash and pea soup. Other Swedish favorites are soft whey butter, caviar and crayfish.
  • Similar to the rest of the countries in Europe, pizza as well as kebab restaurants are everywhere in the country. Cheap lunch meals can be found in signs that read “Daggens rätt” which means meal for the day.

 

Recreation:

  • Sweden is perfect for anyone who loves the outdoor activities – skiing, skating, hiking or berry-picking.
  • Recommended places for great nightlife as well as shopping opportunities are Stockholm and Gothenburg.

 

Safety:

  • Crime rate is low in Sweden. Violent crimes are rare making it a safe vacation destination for US tourists. However, standard precautionary measures still apply. Late night parties usually will have drunk people everywhere and may look for troubles. Pickpockets are rare, however, they are not unheard of.
